Addiction is not a lack of discipline

If you have ever watched someone you love promise to stop, mean it, and then use again, you have probably asked yourself the same question most Nigerian families ask: why can't they just stop?

The honest answer is that addiction is not a willpower problem. It is a health condition, and treating it like a character flaw is one of the main reasons people hide it until things fall apart.

What actually happens in the brain

Substances like alcohol, codeine, tramadol and cannabis change how the brain handles reward, stress and decision-making. With repeated use, the brain starts to treat the substance as something it needs, the same way it treats food or sleep.

That is why someone can sincerely want to stop and still find themselves using. The part of the brain that makes plans is fighting against the part that is screaming for relief.

"I wasn't choosing it over my family. By the end, I wasn't really choosing anything."

Why shame makes it worse

Shame tells people to hide. Hiding means using alone, lying about it, and avoiding the very people who could help. For many people, the fear of being disgraced, beaten, or sent somewhere they will be chained is the biggest barrier to asking for help.

When we replace shame with honesty, people come forward earlier, when treatment is easier and recovery is more likely.

What helps

  • Talking about it calmly, without labels like "junkie" or "useless"
  • Professional help when it is needed, that is voluntary and humane
  • Support for the family, not just the person using
  • People around them who understand, because recovery is a long road
